Academia is often seen as a prestigious and fulfilling career path. But beneath the surface, there lies a critical and often ignored issue—mental health.

As we navigate the academic world, many of us are burdened by the immense pressures of publishing, securing funding, and achieving career milestones. Yet, a less visible but equally damaging pressure comes from within—the stress of mobbing and the intense 1-on-1 mental pressure from mentors. This hidden burden can break even the most resilient minds.

Did you know that over 30% of PhD students report experiencing significant psychological distress during their studies? Even more alarming, 1 in 4 young researchers consider quitting academia due to the mental pressure and lack of support. In some cases, the stress from unrelenting demands and mobbing by mentors has pushed up to 40% of early-career academics to either quit their jobs or seriously contemplate leaving the field altogether.

🚨 It’s time to confront this issue head-on. 🚨

On September 5th, 2024, we’re bringing these tough conversations to the forefront at our event “Mental Health in Academia: The Hot Potato”. We will delve into the challenges faced by students, assistants, and early-career researchers, discussing how the pressure to perform and the toxic dynamics between mentors and mentees are driving some of the brightest minds out of academia.

🔍 What to Expect:

  • Candid Discussions: Real stories from those who have been on the receiving end of academic mobbing and mentor pressure.
  • Expert Panels: Addressing how institutions can recognise, prevent, and combat these issues.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Learn about the real impact of these pressures, supported by the latest research and statistics.
  • Action Plans: Practical strategies to support mental health in academia and to foster a culture of empathy and respect.

💡 Our Mission? To challenge the status quo and ignite a cultural shift in how we approach mental health in academia. We must prioritiseConference Program the well-being of our scholars as much as we do their academic output.

It’s time to stop passing the hot potato and start making real changes. Join us in this critical conversation and be part of the movement to make academia a place where all minds can thrive, not just survive.
